School Refusal

Supporting Your Child Back to Safety, Confidence, and Connection

There’s often more beneath school refusal than what we see on the surface.

What may look like defiance, avoidance, or “just not wanting to go” is often a child’s way of communicating something much deeper—overwhelm, anxiety, fear, or distress they don’t yet have the words to express.

As a parent or caregiver, this can feel confusing, exhausting, and even isolating. You may have tried encouragement, consequences, reassurance—and still feel stuck.

At Serene Woods Psychotherapy, we understand that school refusal is not about “just getting them back to class.” It’s about understanding what’s happening underneath—and helping your child feel safe enough to return.

Our Approach

At Serene Woods Psychotherapy, our work is grounded in:

  • Compassionate, non-judgmental care

  • Evidence-based therapeutic approaches

  • Collaboration with children, families, and (when appropriate) schools

  • Respect for your child’s pace and readiness

We don’t rush the process. We build safety first—because meaningful change grows from there.

Therapy is a space where your child can be understood, not pushed. Where their experiences are taken seriously. Where change becomes possible, step by step.

What Is School Refusal?

School refusal is when a child or teen has significant difficulty attending school due to emotional distress.

This can look like:

  • Frequent complaints of illness before school

  • Emotional outbursts, panic, or shutdowns in the morning

  • Difficulty separating from caregivers

  • Avoidance of specific classes, peers, or environments

  • Gradual increase in missed days

For many children, this is not a choice—it’s a nervous system response.

When school feels unsafe (emotionally or psychologically), avoidance becomes a form of protection.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy is more than encouraging your child to go back—it’s about helping them feel able to.

Using evidence-based approaches and a collaborative, compassionate style, therapy can support your child to:

  • Understand and express what they’re feeling

  • Build emotional awareness and regulation skills

  • Reduce anxiety and overwhelm

  • Develop coping strategies for school-related stress

  • Rebuild confidence and sense of safety

  • Gradually reintegrate into school at a pace that feels manageable

For younger children, this often happens through play-based therapy, where expression feels natural and safe.

For older children and teens, we incorporate age-appropriate strategies that balance insight, skill-building, and real-world application.

Parent & Caregiver Support

You are a vital part of your child’s progress.

We work collaboratively with parents to:

  • Understand what’s happening beneath your child’s behaviour

  • Provide practical strategies for mornings, transitions, and communication

  • Reduce power struggles and increase connection

  • Support consistency between home, school, and therapy

  • Navigate school collaboration (when appropriate)

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

What Might Be Beneath the Surface?

Every child’s experience is different. Together, we gently explore what may be contributing, such as:

  • Anxiety (generalized, social, separation)

  • Perfectionism or fear of failure

  • Bullying or peer challenges

  • Learning differences or academic overwhelm

  • Transitions or life changes

  • Trauma or past negative school experiences

  • Sensory sensitivities or emotional regulation challenges

Rather than focusing only on behaviour, we work to understand the meaning behind it.

Because when we understand the “why,” we can begin to shift the “how.”

  • “Avoidance is often a child’s way of protecting themselves from something that feels too big.”

  • “You’re not failing as a parent—you’re responding to something complex and unseen.”

  • “Your calm becomes their anchor when the world feels overwhelming.”

  • “There is a way through this—one supported step at a time.”
