First ResponderS Clinic

At Serene Woods Psychotherapy, we honour the courage, resilience, and dedication of first responders and military personnel.

We understand that repeated exposure to critical incidents, life‑threatening situations, and high‑stakes decision‑making can take a deep emotional and psychological toll over time.

Why Specialized Support Matters

Canadian research has consistently shown that nearly half of public safety personnel report symptoms consistent with at least one mental disorder. In a national study of more than 5,800 Canadian first responders, 44.5% screened positive for symptoms associated with conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, or problematic alcohol use (Carleton et al., 2018). These rates are substantially higher than those found in the general Canadian population.

Serving in high-risk environments demands strength, composure under pressure, rapid problem‑solving, and self‑sacrifice. The psychological and emotional impacts of these roles often go unrecognized, even by those in the profession. Typical challenges we support include:

  • Cumulative stress reactions, burnout, and fatigue

  • Trauma responses and PTSD symptoms

  • Sleep disturbances, hypervigilance, and mood changes

  • Moral injury and survivor’s guilt

  • Emotional numbing or detachment

  • Impact on family life, personal identity, and reintegration after service

  • “The courage that brings you to the call is the same courage that can guide you toward healing.”

At Serene Woods Psychotherapy, our First Responders Clinic was created with a deep respect for the strength, sacrifice, and dedication of those who serve their communities. Our team includes therapists who have lived alongside first responders in their personal lives, giving them a meaningful understanding of the culture, pressures, and realities of the profession. We recognize that the experiences of first responders do not end when a shift does. The effects can extend into sleep, relationships, parenting, and everyday life.

Many first responders take their wellness seriously and work hard to stay mentally strong. At times, however, the cumulative impact of the job can be underestimated. Some may push through stress, suppress difficult memories, or rely on coping strategies that provide temporary relief but do not fully address the underlying strain.

  • Being part of a first responder family can be meaningful, but it can also bring unique challenges. Irregular schedules, exposure to trauma, and the pressures of the profession can affect relationships, communication, and family life at home.

At Serene Woods Psychotherapy, we recognize that partners and children are often impacted by the demands of the job as well. Our clinicians—including team members with lived experience supporting first responders in their own families—provide a supportive space to help families better understand these dynamics, strengthen connection, and support everyone’s wellbeing.

You do not have to navigate these challenges alone. Support can help build resilience for the entire family.
